Sustainable Urban Landscapes - Integrating Environment, Community and Place

Over the past 5 years, Josh Byrne has been involved in some of the most exciting landscape projects in Western Australia. His presentation will case study several recent flagship projects that demonstrate what is possible when clients are committed to innovation and the local community get behind them. 

Speaker: Josh Byrne

Josh Byrne is an environmental scientist with a passion for appropriate technology and innovative environmental design. Best known for his role as the WA presenter on ABC TV’s Gardening Australia program, he is also the Director of Josh Byrne & Associates, a multi-award winning landscape design, environmental consultancy and communications company based in Fremantle, WA.

Josh also holds an adjunct lecturer position with the School of Environmental Science at Murdoch University where he lectures on topics related to sustainable urban landscapes and urban water management.

The Urban Sanctuary: Elements of design for small private gardens

With houses getting unsustainabily larger and sites getting smaller and smaller, it is important for designers to understand the elements of good site design and not be too influenced by passing trends and fashions.

Why planners and engineers are getting involved in Landscape Design

This talk will outline the process of delivering better urban water management outcomes in WA, highlighting the role of Landscape Architects and Designers in contributing to the creation of more sustainable, water friendly places and spaces that are able to deliver both ecological and community benefits through increased water efficiencies and the integration of stormwater flows into the landscape.

 

Speaker: Shelley Shepherd


Shelley Shepherd is the A/Program Manager of New Water Ways, which is the Western Australian capacity building program for water sensitive urban design. Shelley is an environmental planner with significant experience gained in State and Local Government and the private sector.

Shelley has been working with Government at many levels to raise awareness of how to better integrate environmental issues into planning, as she was the lead consultant in the preparation of Better Urban Water Management (WAPC, 2008) and provided substantial input into the recently released Directions Paper on the Integration of NRM and Land Use Planning (WAPC, 2011).
